Really Woolly Bible Stories

Really Woolly Bible Stories by Bonnie Rickner Jensen, is a collection of select Bible stories set in light-hearted, rhythmic rhyme.   The illustrations, by Julie Sawyer Phillips, are warm and fuzzy interpretations of the Bible stories, set along side adorable pictures of a Really Woolly style lamb, bunny, and duckling.  This board book is a fun way to reinforce or introduce small children to such stories as Creation, Noah’s Ark, Abraham, Joseph, Jonah, and of course, Jesus.  If your family loves the Really Woolly sheep, then they will certainly enjoy this interpretation of famous Bible Stories.    

Each short poem in this little book has its own illustration and Scripture passage reference.  The stories can be read individually, for younger children with shorter attention spans, or all at once for a fun overview of God’s Word.  The poems are creatively written and focus on God’s provision and love.  Certainly these poems would help stir a toddler’s imagination and understanding of God and Jesus.   



My only complaint about Really Woolly Bible Stories is that the book appears to be written for toddlers and young children, but includes some difficult vocabulary words such as “heralded” and “plight” which might be a bit tricky for a youngster to understand.  

Naturally, this book has been road tested by my three year old son, and his opinion of this book counts more than mine.  He was delighted by the Really Woolly Sheep and his little friends, and made up stories about what the animals were doing throughout the book.  While my favorite stories were the renditions of the Creation Story and the Ten Commandments, my little guy was most excited to hear and see the stories about Jesus.  he thoroughly enjoyed the book, and I’m sure that we will read it again and again.  After hearing the closing prayer and seeing the picture of the sleeping animals, he remarked happily, "Sheep and bunny sleeping, Night Night!”
